Watching South Park tonight, best Libertarian cartoon out there that I know of), I saw a brilliant episode poking fun at statist “activists” like Rob Reiner who want to abuse the democratic system by lobbying to censor and ban cigarettes and smoking from all forms of media and public places. Rather than peacefully educating the public with his luxurious resources about the harmful effects of cigarettes (and maybe overeating), he would rather coerce legitimate corporations out of business and strip the population from the freedom to slowly kill themselves. No, not every smoker blows through 2 packs a day, some smoke only 2 or 3 a week, and they are more than aware of the effects. It is a deliberate choice to smoke, not an ignorant one. Reiner and other maternalistic (or paternalistic, whatever floats your boat) politicians and other activists realize this, but still try to force their will on the population. Why? South Park nails it: just because they hate it, and they want to abuse their power in order to get rid of it and control us in the process.
It is no surprise he endorsed the super-statist Hillary Clinton for president, as well as Dean in 2004 and Gore in 2000. Hopefully Clinton is just as successful as the latter two.

I am amused, and perhaps fearful, of the democrats. They have long tried to change the name of our political system to a “Democracy” playing word association with the term democrats. We have a Republic! What scares me is their version of a democracy. Look at their primaries, they vote for delegates, then they have “superdelegates”. The people may voice a super mjority behind one candidate, but there are enough superdelegates to take that choice of the people away and award the nomination to the choice of those in power. Their brand of democracy smell foul to me.
There has been a lot made of “special interest” buying votes on a particular bill. What about the conflict of interest in holding the president hostage to their nomination process. You guess a congressman might actually call in a favor for helping win the nomination? Is it unlikely that a congressman (or the party) might threaten to withhold their support during the renomination in the next term? Doesn’t this significantly effect the balance of power of the branches of government?
It looks to me like the democrats version of democracy is one where the people can’t be trusted to pick the right candidate, just as they can’t be trusted to use their money wisely (tax it away and let them decide how best to spend it), nor can they be trusted to know how to raise their kids. Just look at the bills they have sponsored over the years. It seems to be a common theme from that bunch- government knows best and their one size fits all approach.

South Park is a great show, they speak the truth. Although it seems like it’s all just for fun most of their episodes make valid points.
As far as the Democrat superdelegates go I’m still unsure on what’s going to go on there. Superdelegate vote counts for about 20% of the votes for the convention. Some superdelegates SAY that they will vote the way that the people have voted rather than supporting their own candidate.I’ve heard others still already pledge their support to someone. Regardless, I don’t understand the method. Why would you so blatantly violate the democratic process?
